A well-fitting T-shirt looks effortless; a poor one looks sloppy no matter how good the fabric. Use these four checks in the mirror.

The four-point check

  1. Shoulders. The seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder bone. If it droops down the arm the shirt is too big, unless it is meant to be oversized.
  2. Chest. The fabric should skim your chest without pulling across it or hanging in loose folds. You should be able to pinch about 2 to 3 cm of fabric at the side.
  3. Sleeves. A regular sleeve ends around the middle of your upper arm. It should not strangle the arm or flap loose.
  4. Length. The hem should reach roughly the middle of your hips or the bottom of your zip, and should not ride up when you raise your arms.

Fit names explained

Slim follows the body closely. Regular has some ease. Oversized is deliberately wider with dropped shoulders. Pick by fit name as well as size.

Shrinkage

Cotton can shrink after washing, mostly in length. If a 100% cotton tee fits perfectly when new, it may be short after a few hot washes. Wash cool and air dry if you want to keep the fit.

Measure to be sure

Measure your chest and compare it to the chart on the product page. Our guide on how to measure yourself takes about three minutes. For heavier garments, see how oversized hoodies should fit.
