Petite vs Regular Sizing — What's the Difference?

If you're under 5'4" (163cm), standard clothing sizes are designed for someone taller than you. Petite sizing exists to fix that — but it's not just about length.

What does petite actually mean?

Petite is not a size — it's a proportion. Petite clothing is designed for shorter frames, which means:

• Shorter overall garment length
• Shorter inseam on trousers
• Shorter sleeve length
• Higher rise placement
• Smaller armhole size
• Shorter torso on dresses and tops

The width/volume of a petite size 12 is the same as a regular size 12 — only the proportions change.

Who should shop petite?

You should consider petite sizing if you're 5'4" or under AND regularly experience:

• Trouser hems dragging on the floor even when bought in your waist size
• Dress waist seams sitting on your hips instead of your waist
• Sleeve hems covering your hands
• Shoulder seams drooping toward your upper arm

If you only have one or two of these issues, you may just need alterations rather than a full switch to petite sizing.

• ASOS — extensive petite range, well-designed for shorter proportions. Trouser inseam approximately 28".
• Topshop (now at ASOS) — historically one of the best petite ranges on the UK high street.
• M&S — solid petite range particularly for occasion wear and work clothes.
• River Island — good selection of petite dresses and trousers.
• Zara — no dedicated petite range. Buy the standard range and expect to hem.
• H&M — limited petite range; better to check measurements per item.

EU petite sizing

Most European brands don't have a dedicated petite range. The convention is to look for items with "court" (French), "kurz" (German), or "petite" labelling. For shoes, European sizes are consistent regardless of height — only clothing proportions change.
