Ordering jeans from a US brand while shopping in the UK (or the other way round) is one of the easiest ways to end up with a return. Women's jeans use different numbering in each country, and many brands add a waist number on top. Here's how it all lines up.
Women's jeans: UK to US
US women's sizes run two numbers lower than UK sizes. The waist figures below are approximate, because jeans measurements vary between brands and stretch levels.
| UK | US | Typical jeans waist | Waist (in) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 2 | W25 | 24โ25 |
| 8 | 4 | W26โ27 | 26โ27 |
| 10 | 6 | W27โ28 | 28 |
| 12 | 8 | W29 | 29โ30 |
| 14 | 10 | W30โ31 | 31โ32 |
| 16 | 12 | W32โ33 | 33โ34 |
Men's jeans: UK and US are the same
Men's jeans are sold by waist and inseam in inches in both countries. A W32 L32 in the UK is a W32 L32 in the US, so there's nothing to convert. The confusion comes from brands that use S/M/L, or from European brands that use their own numbers.
Quick rule
For women's sizing, subtract 4 from the UK size to get the US size (UK 12 is US 8). For men's jeans, use the same waist and inseam in either country.
Why your size still might not fit
- Vanity sizing โ some brands label jeans a size smaller than the real waist measurement.
- Stretch โ high-stretch denim can feel comfortable a size down, while rigid denim needs your true size.
- Rise โ high-rise jeans sit higher, so they feel tighter around the waist than low-rise jeans of the same size.
- Cut โ skinny, straight and wide-leg styles all fit the hip and thigh differently.
How to be sure
Measure your natural waist and hips, then compare them with the brand's own size chart rather than the label alone. Our guide to measuring yourself for clothes shows how, and the men's jeans size chart has full waist and inseam tables.
