Sitting between two sizes is common, and the right answer changes with the garment. Work through this checklist.
Size up when
- The fabric has no stretch, such as woven cotton, rigid denim or tailoring.
- You want to layer the item over other clothes.
- The item is fitted and you prefer comfort.
- It may shrink, such as 100% cotton.
Size down when
- The fabric is stretchy or knitted and will give with wear.
- The cut is already oversized or relaxed.
- The brand is known to run large. Check the reviews.
- You want a closer fit in a soft material.
Easy to alter vs hard to alter
A tailor can shorten sleeves and hems and take in the waist. They can rarely fix tight shoulders. Buy for the part that cannot be altered, and tailor the rest.
Use measurements instead of guessing
Measure yourself and compare with the garment's own measurements on the product page, rather than relying on the letter or number. Our guide on how to measure yourself shows how. Also see why sizes are so inconsistent.
Check the return policy
If you are really unsure, order both sizes from a retailer with free returns, keep the one that fits and send the other back.
Let the AI decide
Tell the fit predictor your measurements and preferred fit, and it will recommend one size.
