Cargo pants have made a full comeback โ€” from Y2K nostalgia to current streetwear staple. But sizing is genuinely confusing because the pockets, material, and construction vary wildly. Here's how to buy the right pair.

Why cargo sizing is tricky

Unlike jeans, cargo pants aren't standardised. Some are sized in inches (W32 L32), some use S/M/L/XL, some use European numeric sizing, and some use their own internal system. The pockets also add visual bulk that can affect how size reads on the body.

How to size cargo pants

Waist

The same rules as any trouser โ€” measure your natural waist in inches. If the cargos use S/M/L sizing, use this as a rough guide:

LabelUKWaist (in)Hip (in)
XS6โ€“824โ€“2634โ€“36
S8โ€“1026โ€“2836โ€“38
M10โ€“1228โ€“3038โ€“40
L12โ€“1430โ€“3240โ€“42
XL14โ€“1632โ€“3442โ€“44

Thigh and seat room

Cargo pants need more thigh room than slim trousers โ€” the pockets and construction mean you'll be putting things in them, and that fabric needs somewhere to go. A pair that fits your waist perfectly but is tight in the thigh will be uncomfortable and look wrong. When trying on, sit down and see if the thigh fabric pulls. It shouldn't.

Length

Most cargo pants are designed to hit the ankle with a slight break, or to be worn slightly cropped (above the ankle). Avoid having them drag on the ground โ€” both impractical and not the aesthetic.

The current silhouette

The most popular cargo pant fit right now is relaxed through the thigh with a slight taper at the hem. Not skinny, not extremely baggy โ€” a wide-leg relaxed with some structure.
