Why clothing sizes are so confusing
If you've ever been a size 10 in one shop and a size 14 in another, you're not imagining it. Clothing sizes have no international standard — every brand sets its own measurements, and those measurements have shifted significantly over the decades through a process called vanity sizing.
In the UK, a size 12 from Marks & Spencer will typically have a 36" bust. The same size 12 from Zara might sit closer to a 34.5" bust. And a size 12 on ASOS can vary even between different brands sold on their platform. This is why your measurements — not your label size — are always the most reliable starting point.
International sizing adds another layer. A US size 8 is roughly a UK size 12. An EU size 40 is also a UK 12. But a French 40 and an Italian 40 can differ from the standard EU measurement. Our AI size calculator handles all of these conversions automatically — just enter your details once.
How to measure yourself accurately
For the most accurate size prediction, use a soft fabric tape measure — the kind used in dressmaking. Don't use a metal ruler or pull the tape too tight. Measure over minimal clothing, ideally underwear only, and stand straight with your weight evenly balanced.
| Measurement | How to measure | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Bust / Chest | Wrap tape around the fullest part of your chest, parallel to the floor. Don't compress. Breathe naturally. | Primary measurement for tops, dresses and jackets |
| Waist | Measure your natural waist — the narrowest point, usually 2–3 inches above your belly button. Don't suck in. | Key for jeans, trousers, skirts and fitted dresses |
| Hips | Measure around the widest part of your hips and bottom, usually about 8 inches below your natural waist. | Critical for dresses, skirts, jeans and trousers |
| Inseam | From your crotch seam to the floor along the inside of your leg. Best done with a friend for accuracy. | Determines trouser and jeans length |
| Shoulder width | Measure across your back from shoulder point to shoulder point, across the top of your shoulder blades. | Important for jackets, coats and structured tops |
| Foot length | Trace your foot on paper and measure from heel to longest toe in centimetres. | For accurate shoe sizing in any country |

Men's size guide: UK, US and EU
Men's sizing is slightly more standardised than women's, but brand variations still exist. S/M/L sizing differs between brands — always cross-reference with chest measurements where possible.
| Label size | Chest (in) | Waist (in) | UK/US | EU |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 34–36 | 28–30 | 34–36 | 44–46 |
| S | 36–38 | 30–32 | 36–38 | 46–48 |
| M | 38–40 | 32–34 | 38–40 | 48–50 |
| L | 41–43 | 34–36 | 41–43 | 51–53 |
| XL | 44–46 | 36–38 | 44–46 | 54–56 |
| XXL | 47–49 | 39–41 | 47–49 | 57–59 |
How brand sizing varies — and what to do about it
Even within the same country, brands can vary by one or two full sizes. Here's a quick breakdown of how major high street brands compare to standard UK sizing:
Zara cuts its clothing to a more European silhouette, which tends to run one size smaller than UK standard. If you're usually a UK 12, try a 14 in Zara — especially for fitted pieces.
H&M runs half a size to one size small. Their sizing has become more consistent in recent years, but fitted styles still tend to come up small on the bust and hips.
ASOS own-brand clothing tends to run true to standard UK sizing. However, third-party brands sold on ASOS vary — always check the individual brand's size guide on their product page.
Uniqlo is designed with a more relaxed fit and Japanese sizing, which typically runs one size larger than UK standard. A UK 10 customer often fits comfortably into a Uniqlo XS or S.
Nike sportswear generally runs true to size for both men and women. Some performance styles run slightly small due to their compression design — check the product notes. See our full Nike size chart →
What size am I for jeans?
Jeans sizing works differently from clothing sizes. Instead of UK 10 or US 8, jeans use waist and inseam measurements in inches — for example, 28/30 means a 28-inch waist and 30-inch inseam.
To find your jeans size, measure your natural waist in inches (not your hip measurement). Then measure your inseam — from crotch to floor along the inside of your leg. Use the table below to convert to standard clothing sizes.
| Waist (in) | UK women's | US women's | UK men's |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25–26" | UK 8 | US 4 | — |
| 27–28" | UK 10 | US 6 | W28 |
| 29–30" | UK 12 | US 8 | W30 |
| 31–32" | UK 14 | US 10 | W32 |
| 33–34" | UK 16 | US 12 | W34 |
| 35–36" | UK 18 | US 14 | W36 |
For men's jeans, the waist size on the label is usually your actual waist measurement. For women's jeans, most brands add 10–12 inches to the label — so a women's size 28 jean actually has about a 28-inch waist, but the equivalent clothing size is UK 10.

What size am I for shoes?
Shoe sizing varies significantly between countries. A UK size 5 is a US size 7 (women's) or 6 (men's), and an EU size 38. The safest way to find your size is to measure your foot in centimetres and use the chart below.
| Foot length (cm) | UK | US (women's) | US (men's) | EU |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 22.5 cm | UK 4 | US 6 | US 5 | EU 37 |
| 23.0 cm | UK 5 | US 7 | US 6 | EU 38 |
| 23.5 cm | UK 5.5 | US 7.5 | US 6.5 | EU 38–39 |
| 24.0 cm | UK 6 | US 8 | US 7 | EU 39 |
| 24.5 cm | UK 6.5 | US 8.5 | US 7.5 | EU 40 |
| 25.5 cm | UK 7 | US 9 | US 8 | EU 41 |
| 26.0 cm | UK 8 | US 10 | US 9 | EU 42 |
| 27.0 cm | UK 9 | US 11 | US 10 | EU 43 |

Can AI predict my clothing size?
Yes — and it's significantly more accurate than guessing from a label. Our AI Fit Predictor combines your height, weight, age, body shape and preferred fit style to generate a size recommendation that accounts for how different garment types are cut.
It's not a replacement for trying clothes on, but it dramatically reduces the chance of ordering the wrong size online — which saves you money on returns and the frustration of items that don't fit.
The tool also factors in brand-specific sizing tendencies. If you tell it you're shopping at Zara, it will adjust its recommendation accordingly — because a Zara 12 fits differently from an H&M 12.
Frequently asked questions
What size am I?
The quickest way to find your size is to measure your bust, waist and hips with a soft tape measure and compare them to a size chart. For women, bust measurement is the most important starting point for tops; waist measurement is key for trousers and skirts. Use the AI size finder at the top of this page to get a personalised recommendation in seconds.
What size am I if I'm 5'4" and 130lbs?
At 5'4" and 130lbs, most women fall around a UK 10–12 (US 6–8, EU 38–40) for tops. However, your body shape and where you carry weight matters just as much as height and weight. Use the AI predictor above with your bust, waist and hip measurements for a more accurate answer.
What size am I if I'm 5'6" and 140lbs?
At 5'6" and 140lbs, women typically wear a UK 10–12. Men at that height and weight usually fall between a Small and Medium depending on their build — broader shoulders will push toward a Medium or Large even at the same weight. Body shape and muscle distribution affect fit significantly.
What size am I if I'm 5'8" and 160lbs?
At 5'8" and 160lbs, women generally wear a UK 12–14 (US 8–10, EU 40–42). Men at this height and weight are typically a Medium to Large. Use the AI tool above for a more tailored recommendation based on your body shape and preferred fit.
How do I find my clothing size without measuring?
If you don't have a tape measure, you can estimate your size using height and weight as a starting point — which is what the AI tool above does. However, for the most accurate result, it's worth measuring at least your bust and waist. A piece of string and a ruler can work in place of a tape measure — wrap the string around your body, mark it, then measure the string flat.
What size jeans am I?
Jeans are sized by waist and inseam in inches. Measure your natural waist (not your hips) and your inseam (inside leg from crotch to floor). A 28" waist is roughly UK 10 / US 6. A 32" waist is roughly UK 14 / US 10. See the jeans size chart further up this page for the full breakdown.
Why am I a different size in different shops?
Clothing sizes are not standardised — every brand uses its own measurements, and those measurements vary by country, garment type and even collection. Zara runs about one size smaller than UK standard. Uniqlo runs large. ASOS own-brand tends to be true to size. This is why your body measurements are more reliable than your label size when shopping, especially online.
Can AI predict my clothing size?
Yes — AI size prediction uses your measurements and body type to generate a size recommendation that accounts for how different brands and garment styles are cut. Our AI Fit Predictor does exactly this: enter your height, weight, body shape and preferred fit, and it gives you a personalised size recommendation for tops, jeans, dresses and shoes across specific brands.
What is a size medium in UK sizing?
A women's Medium in UK sizing typically corresponds to UK 12–14 (US 8–10, EU 40–42), with a bust of approximately 36–38 inches and a waist of 28–30 inches. A men's Medium is usually a 38–40 inch chest. However, these ranges vary by brand — always check the specific size guide on the product page.
How do I convert my UK size to US size?
For women's clothing, subtract 4 from your UK size to get your US size. So a UK 12 = US 8, UK 14 = US 10, UK 8 = US 4. For men's clothing, UK and US sizes are generally the same. For shoes, women add 2 to their UK size to get US size (UK 5 = US 7), and men add 1 (UK 8 = US 9). Use our US to UK size converter for the full chart.
