Children's shoe size calculator — foot length to shoe size

The most accurate way to find your child's shoe size is to measure their foot in centimetres and look up the result. Age guides and label sizes are unreliable — foot length in cm is the only measurement that converts directly and consistently across UK, US and EU sizing systems.

How to measure your child's foot in cm

You don't need any special equipment — just a piece of paper, a pencil and a ruler. Here's the correct method:

  • Step 1: Place a piece of A4 paper on a hard floor (not carpet)
  • Step 2: Have your child stand on the paper wearing the socks they'll wear with the shoes
  • Step 3: Trace around both feet with a pencil held vertically (not at an angle)
  • Step 4: Measure the longest distance heel to toe on each foot tracing
  • Step 5: Use the larger of the two measurements
  • Step 6: Add 1–1.5cm growing room, then match to the chart above
💡 Measure in the afternoon — feet swell slightly through the day and are largest in the afternoon or evening. Measuring in the morning can result in shoes that feel tight by lunchtime.

Frequently asked questions

My child's foot is 17cm — what shoe size is that?

A 17cm foot corresponds to UK 8 (US 9, EU 26) in children's shoe sizing. This is typically worn by children aged 4–5 years. Remember to add 1–1.5cm growing room when buying, so you'd look for a shoe with an insole length of around 18–18.5cm.

My child's foot is 19cm — what size is that?

A 19cm foot is UK 10 (US 11, EU 28–29), typically worn by children aged 6–7 years.

My child's foot is 21cm — what size is that?

A 21cm foot is UK 13 (US 1 Youth, EU 31–32). This is the last size in the standard children's range before junior sizing begins, typically around age 9–10.

How much growing room should I add?

Add 1–1.5cm (about a thumb's width) beyond the longest toe. Less than 1cm means the shoe is already too small. More than 1.5cm means it may cause tripping or blisters from excessive movement inside the shoe.
